RTE broadcasting personality Ryan Tubridy recently declared that Galway is his favourite city to visit and part of the reason is because of The Black Magic Big Band. Tubridy wrote in his Sunday World column "Why doesn't Dublin have anything like this? An unfortgetable night out with one of the best sounding bands I have ever heard ".

The legendry Sonny Knowles came to BarCuba to watch the band on his birthday,but he was in for a surprise because Mischa Langemeijer had called in sick and Sonny was persueded to sit in at second alto. He had the time of his life and the crowd loved him. He was playing with a borrowed sax and borrowed glasses and afterwards said" that is the best birthday present I have ever had and the best band I have ever played with".
